What every Union member should know...

Here are some facts that you should know about our Local.

  1. IATSE Local 480 will do its best to fairly represent you and your talents to any production that has a contract with us. We are, however, not a hiring hall and are never directly responsible for getting any of our members a job. In order for us to represent you, we ask that you supply us with a one-page resume that clearly states your crafts and recent work history.  It is also your responsibility to provide us with your current address and contact information.  If you move, change your phone number, or update your resume, please get that information to us immediately.
  2. When you work on a contract production, your employer will make contributions on your behalf to the IATSE National Benefit Funds. These funds will provide you with medical coverage, an annuity fund and a pension plan. When contributions have been made in your name to the funds that are equal to or greater than the cost of one quarter’s medical premium, you will be sent a full packet of information on the programs by the INBF. If you would like to look over copies of this material before you are in the plan, please contact our office.  The number to the INBF 1-800-456-3863.
  3. The quarterly dues are $65, of which $42 will be paid to the International as of January 1, 2007. This rate will remain in effect for 2007. Quarterly dues are payable on January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1.  The dues must be paid within the first two months of each quarter (See # 5).  If you do not pay your dues by the last day of a quarter, you will be assessed a $10 late fee.  New members do not owe quarterly dues for the quarter in which they are initiated.  This initiation date is stamped on their application by the New York office.
  4. Work dues, which are a separate assessment from quarterly dues, are presently 4% of your gross pay on any contract production.  This should be automatically deducted from your paycheck by the payroll company. If for any reason the 4% work dues are not deducted, you are still responsible for paying that amountFor 2006 there is a $2000 cap in effect on work dues payments. Any overages will be reimbursed to the member at the end of the year.
  5.  Any member who is less than 60 days delinquent on any financial obligation to the union is considered to be in "good standing" and is therefore eligible to attend all meetings and vote on union matters.
  6. If you should fail to pay quarterly dues for 2 quarters, or if you have outstanding work dues for more than 6 months, or if you do not pay your initiation fee in full within 6 months, you will be sent a certified letter stating that you are about to be expelled.  If you do not contact us within ten days of receiving the letter and make arrangements to pay off your debt, your expulsion will be finalized and reported to the International. To rejoin the Local, you will have to be approved by our membership and by the International, pay a fine (currently $150), and pay all monies owed at the time of your expulsion plus all intervening dues that would have been applicable between your expulsion and the time that you reapply.
  7. If you wish, you can take an Honorable Withdrawal from the Local at any time by submitting a written request to that affect to the office. You must be current on all quarterly, work dues, and any other outstanding fiscal responsibilities to the Local to qualify for an Honorable Withdrawal.  While you are on an Honorable Withdrawal, you will not have to pay dues to the Local, but should you seek reinstatement, you will be responsible for up to 8 quarters of back dues.  There is no reinstatement fee.
  8. All members of Local 480 are required to take our General Safety Training class.   We are currently giving this class approximately once a quarter. The venue for these classes alternates between Santa Fe and Albuquerque. You will not be considered a full member of Local 480 until you have been certified in this course.  If you have not yet completed this class, please call the office to schedule yourself for an upcoming session.
  9. Monthly membership meetings for IATSE Local 480 are held on the third Sunday of each month. The meetings alternate between Santa Fe and Albuquerque. You will receive a newsletter about a week before each meeting that will give you the location of that month’s meeting.
  10. The office for Local 480 is located on 1418 Cerrillos Road in Santa Fe.  The office is open from 11 am to 7 pm, Monday through Thursday, and from 11 am to 6 pm on Friday.  Contact numbers for the office are printed on the Officers’ Information Sheet included with this packet and in each newsletter that you will receive.
